The road to equity in Seattle’s schools

Seattle Public Schools (SPS) has a glaring racial equity problem. Students of color face injustice because of biases and institutional racism built into our schools and society… In our schools, we see examples of institutional racism when discipline policies disproportionately affect young men of color, when students don’t see themselves reflected in their curriculum or teachers, and when communities of color aren’t part of the decision making process.”

Solving seattle’s high school enrollment crisis

“On September 4, high schools across Seattle opened with outrageously large class sizes and students scrambling to secure the classes they need to graduate on time. Seattle Public Schools (SPS) needs to hire dozens of teachers with specialized certifications. “Minority youth from Community Passageways invited several candidates for various positions to come to City Hall and answer their questions face to face… The goal of Thursday’s forum was to see how candidates would handle issues that are directly affecting youth and people they are trying to represent”

Candidates in attendance at the forum were ‘graded’ on their answers to the questions throughout the evening. By the end of the night, Eric ended up with the overall top score in his race for Position 1, and the top marks of any candidate in the areas of Racial Equity and Educational and Employment Opportunities.
